With Studio One 6, PreSonus has released the first major update to its DAW since the company was acquired by Fender in 2021.
Fender CEO Andy Mooney hinted that the future of software could be “easier, more intuitive and more affordable” when speaking to MusicRadar earlier this yearand you can see some signs of change in Studio One 6.
New smart templates, for example, are designed to make it easy to get started on a specific task right away. These include preconfigured tracks and channels with a customized user interface and automatic download of the necessary content, with options for basic recording, beatmaking, mixing stems, mastering an album, setting up a live show and more. There’s a drop zone for importing audio, video, and MIDI files, as well as interactive tutorials with instructions and links to related video content.
The Customization Editor, on the other hand, allows you to show or hide almost all of Studio One 6’s tools and features, allowing you to customize the interface to fit your workflow and task at hand. Beginners can strip things down to the essentials, while more experienced users can put performance features right under their fingertips.
Custom interfaces can be saved and recalled, and again there are preset options to use as starting points.
Songwriters will also appreciate the new lyrics support – you can now add lyrics to a project via a dedicated editor. In Score and Piano views, lyrics can be attached to notes word by word or syllable by syllable, eliminating confusion.
Following a multimedia tip, there is now a Global Video Track. Clips can be added by dragging them onto the timeline, and the track can contain an unlimited number of clips. Thumbnails are automatically generated, and there is a dedicated embedded audio subtrack to use for reference. These include a mixer channel, plugin processing and output routing options.
You can also expect deeper integration with PreSonus Sphere — particularly with its cloud-based collaboration workspaces. There are now sharing and syncing options built into the main menu, and a new installer panel allows Sphere members to explore, download and install content with a variety of viewing, searching and filtering options.
Finally, no major DAW update would be complete without some new plugins, and Studio One 6 gets a few in the form of the new De-Esser and Vocoder. Improvements have also been made to ProEQ, Autofilter, Mai Tai, Sample One XT and Presence XT.
“With this latest iteration, the team remained focused on listening to the needs of loyal users and developing innovative solutions to increase productivity in the professional audio production space,” said Arnd Kaiser, general manager, software at PreSonus. “We want engineers, producers, recording musicians and creatives around the world to feel supported and inspired to create their best work yet.”
“We are excited about the launch of Studio One 6 and are fully invested in supporting the continued expansion and adoption of Studio One as a total solution for professionals and dedicated DIY enthusiasts alike,” said Evan Jones, Fender CMO. “The global adoption of digital creative and productivity tools continues to grow, spreading across all forms of musical expression, in the hands of an even broader audience of creators, producers, mixers and performers.”
