Tom McIntyre celebrates Reading’s lead against Huddersfield

Reading rode to a comfortable win over Huddersfield to remain third in the Championship and doomed new Terrier boss Mark Fotheringham to a losing start.

The Royals were 2-0 up at half-time in the Berkshire sunshine thanks to a Tom McIntyre header and an own goal from Huddersfield keeper Lee Nicholls.

Substitute Yakou Meite scored a third goal for the Royals shortly after coming on, while Tom Lees struck the late consolation goal for the Terriers in added time.

It was the first game in charge for new Huddersfield boss Fotheringham following his appointment on Wednesday and he will have no illusions about the hard work he has put in after replacing Danny Schofield.

After Coventry won for the first time this season by beating Middlesbrough, the Terriers are now just a point behind bottom and three points from safety.

Reading took the lead just before the half-hour when centre-back McIntyre caught a Tom Ince corner and headed the ball back over the goal into the corner of the net.

The lead was doubled 10 minutes before half-time when Nicholls deflected a Jeff Hendrick cross into his own net.

The second half continued similarly as Meite scored ten minutes after coming on and converted from close range after Nicholls spilled the ball.

Lees headed home from a Sorba Thomas corner in the final minute of added time to give the ailing Huddersfield fans something to cheer about.
