We’re back again with another review round-up, and this time it’s for NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition, coming to Switch next week.

This action RPG first debuted on PS4 and Steam in 2017. This latest iteration of the action RPG gives players access to all previously released DLC – plus exclusive costumes for the Switch version. Here’s a bit more about it from Nintendo’s website:

The critically acclaimed world of NieR:Automata invades Nintendo Switch! When machine life forms from another world attack without warning, unleashing a new breed of threat, humanity is driven off Earth and takes refuge on the moon. Plunge into a fierce battle as 2B, a member of the android military unit YoRHa, to take back the planet.

And this is what the critics say about the Switch version:

GameSpot thought NieR got “enough on Switch” to make it worth checking out:

“Nier: Automata does enough right on Switch that it’s definitely worth playing here. Combat still feels fluid, load times are reasonable, and in the several hours we tested it was easy to forget it wasn’t running on a PlayStation or Xbox.”

Pocket Tactics gave the Switch version a 9 out of 10, noting that there were “little to no discernible compromises”:

“Nier Automata is one of the best games from previous generations of consoles and has made the jump to the Nintendo Switch in an incredibly impressive way. Little to no noticeable compromises were made to bring it to a handheld system. and the magical, inventive nature of the thing sings as loud as ever.”

The Nintendo World Report gave the PlatinumGames title a perfect score of 10/10, mentioning that it’s “one of the best third-party Switch ports yet”:

“This might be the best third-party switch port I’ve ever played, making it incredibly easy to recommend this game to anyone who’s never played it before.” There’s just no two minds: NieR Automata was a triumph of design in 2017 and it’s a triumph of porting big games to Switch in 2022.”

Gaming Bible also praised it, calling it a “fantastic port of a phenomenal game”:

Nier: Automata on Switch is more than good enough to finish endings A through E all over again if you’ve already done it – this time from the comfort of wherever you want. And for newbies, this port is of such a high standard that we guarantee you won’t feel like you’ve had an inferior experience compared to friends playing this wonderfully unique hack-and-slash-and-cry-a have -bit ’em up on other platforms. It’s a prime example of how the Switch really doesn’t have to be a “smaller” system than its console generation competitors when a port is in the right hands.”

And God Is A Geek gave it a 9/10 – summing it up as “essential” and “still insane” despite some hardware setbacks:

“I can’t tell you it’s the best version and I can’t tell you that you need to buy it again, although I’m sure Taro-san would love it.” But I’m so glad I played it, as it’s a reminder that no matter how old you get or how many games you play, there are always special moments that will stand out from the rest.

“NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition is brilliant. It’s a little grittier than its big brother versions thanks to the hardware, but the heart and soul is there, the story and combat is excellent, and the idea of being able to actually walk to the bathroom while playing feels kind of like one kind of meta endgame for the title that even the biggest fans couldn’t foresee. Still important, still crazy. Play this game.
