There is an interesting betting card at Ascot on Saturday where the group races could be a little more open than the bets suggest and some very tight handicaps.
The first four homes from the handicap of seven furlongs at the last meeting are going head-to-head again in the heat of the day Peroni Nastro Azzurron Challenge Cupwith the winner being Fresh as the favorite in their hat-trick quest.
It’s obviously possible to plead for either of them if the quartet are only covered by a half-length on this occasion and there’s unlikely to be much between them in Saturday’s weights.
If it’s Ascot in the fall, however, there must be a choice RIVER NYMPH from the in-form Clive Cox stable, who won here twice as a three-year-old and last season won the Victoria Cup.
He did well in this year’s version of the race too, finishing third, and then maybe he found something quick at Royal Ascot when he finished a respectable eighth. That last run signaled a definite return to form and is worth a punt at 12/1.

Charlie Appleby’s State Secret made his first group debut at Sky Bet Great Voltigeur in York last time out and although he finished second I thought the winner Deauville Legend, favorites for the Melbourne Cup, brushed him aside fairly easily and he In group three I have to show a little more speed Peroni Nastro Azzurro Cumberland Lodge stakes.
The two I really like against him are Cresta, who turned Windsor’s August Stakes into a procession last time out and seems to favor ground with some give and the notable BECOME A SHIRTwho won the Copper Horse Handicap here in June before winning the Old Newton Cup at Haydock a few weeks later.
They’re some of the toughest handicaps of the season and his fifth in the Sky Bet Ebor from a poor draw of a 110 grade was no less trouble.
He is recovering after failing to stay behind Coltrane in the Doncaster Cup last time out but if that effort hasn’t left its mark on him I think 10/1 is grossly underestimating his chance here.

Creative Force clearly sets the standard for form in Group Three John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes spanning six stadiums and with no penalties seems to be the one to beat.
The problem is he also has a five furlongs entry on the map and I’m wondering if in a couple of weeks they want to sharpen it with Champions Day in mind so maybe he doesn’t even make the race.
Al Suhail, a horse with plenty of natural pace, would be interesting if Appleby represented a similar trick with Naval Crown in the Platinum Jubilee, so he knows what type of horse is required, although he has a few entries over the weekend too, so not recommended at this stage.
That makes ROHANa two-time Wokingham winner, a strong game as he clearly loves the stiff track and ground with the give in it so potentially good value at 5/1 with no other entries.

Coolmore has no entries so Ryan Moore, who won it in June, could ride and his prize could collapse.
Saturday’s Group One action comes in the form of Newmarket Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes where Saffron Beach will be on a recovery mission after coming second in Leopardstown’s Matron Stakes.
She’s had a great season and a trip to the Breeders’ Cup may be on the horizon, but it’s a pretty quick turnaround and I thought she might be vulnerable here as a mare who always gives herself a tough race.
Tenebrism, who finished second to Saffron Beach in the Prix Rothschild, showed again her penchant for seven furlongs when she won the Prix Jean Prat at Deauville in mid-summer and never won that trip so I think she will wait for other engagements , but there No such worries about 1000 guineas runners-up SUCCESSFUL JOURNEY.
Her owner and trainer are on an incredible run, winning the Cheveley Park Stakes last weekend and her win over Inspiral in the Falmouth Stakes again showed her penchant for a straight course.
The runner-up may not have been at her best but has given due credit to form in the Prix Jacques Le Marois where she clearly reversed form but the trainer has had that race as her goal since winning the July meeting and that’s good enough for me with 7/1 on offer.
